In an Irish mining town, Jackie Elliot (Gary Lewis) signs his youngest son Billy (Jamie Bell) up for boxing lessons, thinking that his son’s possible future sport stardom will help with the family’s finances. Billy has other things in mind when he discovers the ballet class that shares the gym with the boxing ring. Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Waters) accepts Billy into her ballet class, and Billy starts taking private ballet lessons from her with the money he is supposed to be spending on boxing lessons. Trouble comes when the miners, including Billy’s older brother (Jamie Draven) and father, go on strike, and Billy’s secret lessons are revealed to his family. With the help of his teacher, Billy prepares for an audition the Royal Ballet School, and does so with some unexpected help.
