Twins Sharon and Susan (Hayley Mills) first meet at summer camp. Their parents divorced when they were small, and neither twin knew the other existed. They first notice they look alike and take an instant dislike to each other. After several mean pranks, the camp director gets tired of their bickering and isolates them together in their own cabin. That's when they discover they're sisters. The girls decide to switch places when they go home and try to get their parents back together. Susan goes home to dad Mitch (Brian Keith), and Sharon goes to stay with mom Maggie (Maureen O'Hara). Susan finds that Dad has a nasty new girlfriend Vicky (Joanna Barnes) he plans to marry, so the girls conspire to get Mom out to visit Dad. Maggie, with Sharon in tow, pays Mitch a visit. While acting very sweet and innocent, she and the girls work to sabotage Mitch and Vicky's relationship.
