As youngsters the two meet each other as their owners are neighbors and they hit it off as friends right away. Copper's owner Amos Slade is not so nice though and when he discovers Tod, he is determined to kill him despite Copper's friendship with him. When Slade's other hound dog, Chief, becomes involved in a pursuit with Tod things go bad and Chief ends up being run over by a train. Copper vows to revenge the death of Chief on Tod and disavows any friendship with him. Mama Tweed, Tod's owner, takes Tod to a nature preserve where no hunting is allowed in the hopes of saving him from Slade and Copper. However, Slade and Copper are soon trespassing on the preserve in an attempt to kill Tod. After all of this Tod still believes that he and Copper are 'gonna be friends forever', but will they survive this test of their friendship? |
